Lead Motion Graphics Designer/Engineer (JS/CSS), Frontend

Storyline is an early-stage, founder-funded startup aimed at changing the way we consume and interact with data-driven information. We’re developing a platform that generates dynamic, analytics-rich, personalized, interactive video episodes straight from data, at scale and across domains, leveraging a number of tools in the growing AI toolbox along the way. We’re actively signing clients, and getting incredible feedback so far, and now we’re looking to grow.

In this role, you’d be taking the lead on the most creative, critical aspects of our episode presentation and motion graphics design. This includes frontend Player/Scene libraries, owning the orchestration and mechanics (and collaborating on the design) of motion graphics, transitions, interactions, and overall polish. It’ll require a deep knowledge of CSS and JavaScript (plus libraries like D3), as well as a creative streak for co-designing novel, beautiful, seamless experiences in JS/CSS. This role could largely be remote, but the ideal candidate would be located near one of our two centers of gravity (Los Angeles or Chicago) for in-person sessions as necessary. As a role central to our UX, you’d be working in conjunction with our current Player architect, our Core Platform team, and the Product/Design team. This is an opportunity to join a small company already booking revenue at the bleeding edge of human-information interfaces – if you’re excited to get creative, iterate quickly and build novel experiences, the sky’s the limit.

Whoever assumes this role would:

  • Work collaboratively with Product/Design to envision and engineer beautiful video-like experiences in JS/CSS
  • Build out and maintain a library of configuration-driven components to be reused across our scenes and interactions
  • Co-define the configuration specifications to invoke and control new scene architecture
  • Identify, design, and implement augmentations and improvements to our current player/scene architecture
  • Build and maintain a testing framework to ensure all assets are working correctly on each release

REQUIREMENTS

What You Have

  • At least three years experience in a frontend software engineering role
  • Experience with JS- and CSS-based motion graphics and animation (inclusive of D3)
  • A portfolio of work demonstrating your experience with motion graphics
  • Experience with object-oriented design, development, and testing patterns
  • A desire to set standards and define best practice for a growing team

Who You Are

  • Smart, driven, scrappy, enthusiastic, and excited at the prospect of joining a small, agile company with lots of room for growth
  • An analytical thinker with a passion for communication and data
  • As excited about collaborating on a whiteboard as you are about a day of coding with headphones on
  • Organized, responsible, and detail oriented
  • Direct and unafraid to share or take constructive feedback (or call out issues) whenever necessary
  • Ideally, near enough to Los Angeles or Chicago to a) work in roughly the same time zone, give or take a couple hours, and b) join in-person collaboration sessions on a (roughly) monthly basis
