Software Engineer, Core Platform

Storyline is an early-stage, founder-funded startup aimed at changing the way we consume and interact with data-driven information. We’re developing a platform that generates dynamic, personalized, interactive video episodes straight from data, at scale and across domains, leveraging a number of tools in the growing AI toolbox along the way. We’re actively signing clients, and getting incredible feedback so far, and now we’re looking to grow.

This role is on the Core Platform team based in Chicago (though we are open to remote work for the right fit), with a focus on data-driven language generation. You’ll be taking the lead on a critical component of our generative pipeline, owning the language architecture and mechanics (and associated QA) as we scale up from our earlier set of clients to hundreds and beyond. Part of this role is staying up to date on the state of the art, ensuring that we’re always taking advantage of emerging techniques and technologies, but always with the requirement that our system tell the truth, 100% of the time. This is an opportunity to join a small team already booking revenue at the bleeding edge of human-information interfaces, and the sky’s the limit.

Whoever assumes this role would:

  • Identify, design, and implement augmentations and improvements to our system’s current language capabilities, inclusive of dynamic reprioritization of information and language variability
  • Ensure system performance and truth maintenance through a robust QA framework
  • Set us up for scale and per-client language customization (eventually through client-facing configuration tools)
  • Co-define new features with our CSTO and leads on other components of the generative pipeline
  • Entertain SOTA mechanisms for language generation and variability (e.g. the latest and greatest LLMs), but always prioritizing truth over speed or fluency
  • (Eventually) grow and lead a team of your own, ensuring your team adheres to best practice in building robust, reliable and maintainable software

REQUIREMENTS

What You Have

  • At least three years experience in a software engineering role, ideally with Python
  • Writing skills and a deep understanding of the mechanics of English (and, ideally, at least one additional language)
  • A degree in Computer Science or equivalent (though significant experience can stand in for this requirement for the right fit)
  • Experience working with data analysis and analytics platforms
  • (Ideally) experience in language generation/modeling
  • Experience with object-oriented design, development, and testing patterns
  • A desire to set standards and define best practice for a growing team

Who You Are

  • Smart, driven, scrappy, enthusiastic, and excited at the prospect of joining a small, agile company with lots of room for growth
  • An analytical thinker with a passion for communication and data
  • As excited about collaborating on a whiteboard as you are about a day of coding with headphones on
  • Organized, responsible, and detail oriented
  • Direct and unafraid to share or take constructive feedback (or call out issues) whenever necessary
  • Near enough to Chicago to a) work in roughly the same time zone, give or take a couple hours, and b) come to Chicago for in-person collaboration sessions at least monthly
